Barrage du Gouffre D’Enfer (Dam of the Hell’s Pit)
Nicknamed the “Dam of the Hell’s Pit,” the Barrage du Gouffre d’Enfer isn’t actually a gateway to the underworld. Built in the 1860s under the reign of Napoleon III, this dam near Saint-รtienne, France, was a marvel of engineering for its time. Towering over a dramatic gorge created by the Furan River, the dam’s impressive size and steep setting likely inspired its fiery name. Today, the Barrage du Gouffre d’Enfer serves as a testament to human ingenuity and a scenic spot for hikers to explore the surrounding Pilat Natural Park.
Greyfriars Bobby
Greyfriars Bobby, an enduring symbol of loyalty and devotion, hails from the heart of Edinburgh in the 19th century. This tale began with John Gray, a humble night watchman who adopted a small Skye Terrier named Bobby. For two years, they were inseparable until Johnโs death in 1858. Heartbroken, Bobby refused to leave his master’s graveside in Greyfriars Kirkyard. For 14 years, the faithful dog guarded the grave, earning the affection of the local community. In recognition of his loyalty, Bobby was cared for by the people of Edinburgh and granted a special licence. Upon his death in 1872, Bobby was buried near his beloved owner, solidifying their story as a timeless testament to unwavering devotion. Today, a statue commemorates Greyfriars Bobby, attracting visitors from around the world who are touched by this poignant legend. #edinburgh #history #loyalty
Wojtek the Soldier Bear Memorial
Wojtek the Soldier Bear Memorial in Edinburgh honours a remarkable and endearing story from World War II. Wojtek, a Syrian brown bear cub, was adopted by the Polish II Corps in 1942. He quickly became more than a mascot, accompanying soldiers through harsh campaigns. Remarkably, Wojtek was enlisted as a private, complete with rank and serial number, to allow him to travel with the unit. He played a pivotal role in the Battle of Monte Cassino, where he famously helped carry ammunition. After the war, Wojtek retired to Edinburgh Zoo, where he lived until 1963. McCaig’s Tower
McCaig’s Tower in Oban is a striking and enigmatic structure that dominates the skyline of this picturesque Scottish coastal town. Designed to resemble the Roman Colosseum, the granite structure boasts an imposing, circular wall with two-tiered arcades offering panoramic views of Oban Bay and the surrounding islands. Despite McCaig’s grand vision, the project was left unfinished following his death in 1902.
